Geography
Intent, Implementation, Impact
Intent
At West Street Primary School, we believe Geography is fundamental in enabling children to develop a coherent understanding of the world around them. Being taught location and place knowledge, about the human and physical features of the world, alongside geographical skills and fieldwork, will prepare them to live and thrive in the ever-changing world we live in.
During their studies, the children will develop knowledge and understanding of their local area and beyond which will include the United Kingdom, Europe and South America. As they journey through our school, indoor and outdoor learning will enable them to extend their geographical vocabulary and skills. They will have opportunities to collect, analyse and present data and use maps, atlases, globes and digital mapping. With the current and ongoing issues our world is facing, we also educate our children so that they become compassionate citizens who care about our earth.
We endeavour to provide a geography curriculum which ignites every child’s passion for learning as they journey through West Street School
Implementation
Geography is taught in topic-based blocks throughout the year and key knowledge and skills are identified to ensure progression throughout each year group across the school. At the beginning of each topic, children are able to convey what they know already as well as what they would like to find out. This ensures that lessons are relevant and take account the children’s needs and their geographical interests. Every child is supported and challenged to reach their full potential.
Cross curricular outcomes in geography are specifically planned for, with strong links between Geography and English and Maths lessons identified and utilised allowing children to embed their basic skills. in a real-life context. The local provides many opportunities for learning outside of the classroom to achieve the desired outcomes.
Impact
The geographical journey of children in our school and the experiences we offer will engage and inspire pupils to have a love and appreciation of the world we live in. The impact of teaching geography will be seen across the school and will forge important links between home, school, the local area and the wider world.
By encouraging the enjoyment and engagement in Geography, children will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding that will allow them to fulfil their potential. We endeavour to provide guidance and further opportunities to support them in their next steps.
