Pancake Day!

Date: 1st Jul 2022 @ 10:47am

Pancakes are associated with Shrove Tuesday, the day preceding Lent, because they are a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent.

We spoke about what will happen within the 40 days leading up to Easter and that this is fasting season for Christians, known as Lent, and if we were willing to give up something that we enjoy for 40 days. Some suggested, “chocolate”, “sweets”, “lollipops” and “crisps”.

You can’t catch me! We read the story of ‘The Runaway Pancake’ , how a little old lady and her husband make a pancake that ran away from them a dog, cow and a fox, then it came across a clever little pig that gobbled it up. The children did some writing relating to the story, saying what the character of choice did.

Making Pancakes! The children used eggs, flour and milk to make a batter. We used the weighing scales to weigh out the ingredients and our big muscles to mix and stir to combine it altogether. The teachers used the hot oven to make the pancakes whilst we watched a video of Shrove Tuesday. We then enjoyed eating our pancakes with lemon and sugar – they went down a treat!

The children had a go at decorating their own pancakes and sharing their favourite topping ideas. The children enjoyed “cream and chocolate”, “chocolate spread”, “syprup and fruit” on their pancakes at home.

Once we had made our pancakes, the children wrote down the ingredients we had used, using their phonics knowledge.
